Hong Kong SAR Global Sources has opened nominations for its 2nd annual Electronics Design Awards, which aim to identify the most exciting new electronics made in Asia. The 2008 Global Sources Electronics Design Awards are open to manufacturers in Asia of products in the following categories: Computer products – such as: computer input devices, motherboards, PC cameras, PDAs, portable media players, printer cartridges and toners, and speakers Home entertainment – such as: amplifiers, audio, flat-panel TVs, microphones, speakers and video players and recorders In-car electronics – such as: car GPS, car media players and car safety electronic systems Mobile communication products – such as: mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios and wireless communication equipment Networking products – such as: broadband, GPS, networking, VoIP and fiber optic communication equipment Personal electronics – such as: digital photo frames, headphones, health monitors, massage equipment, portable media players and recorders, radios and video game accessories Power supplies – such as: batteries, computer and telecom power supplies, solar cells and panels, and UPS Security products – such as: access control systems and products, CCTV products and systems, intruder alarms and sensors and security communications and monitoring products A special award under home entertainment is set to recognize the most innovative flat-panel TV entry. Products eligible for this special award include HDTVs, home LCD TVs, OLED TVs and plasma TVs. "Asia, especially Greater China, Japan, Korea and India, has rapidly become the pioneer in electronics design," noted president of Global Sources’ Electronics Business Unit, Mark A. Saunderson. "Manufacturers in the region have stepped out from the original equipment manufacturer mindset, and are designing their very own innovative products. These products enable consumers to improve the way we work, play and live our lives." "The awards aim to recognize the success of these Asian manufacturers, and we plan to showcase their innovation to tens of thousand buyers from around the world visiting the China Sourcing Fair: Electronics and Components," Saunderson said. Judging criteria, awards ceremony and press conference An independent panel of judges, made up of industry analysts, academics and procurement specialists, will evaluate the nominations based on product design, innovative manufacturing and creative marketing strategies. Award-winning products are to be showcased at the China Sourcing Fair: Electronics and Components’ New Products Gallery at Hong Kong’s AsiaWorld-Expo, scheduled to be held from October 12 to 15, 2008. Further recognition for the winning manufacturers is expected at the awardsceremony and press conference. There are also plans for regional media to be invited to interview winners to understand the thinking and development that went into creating the top products.
