China (mainland) – Stressing on the "Green GDP" concept that not only aims to reduce pollution but also to achieve economic development on an environment-friendly basis, the region’s 11th Five-Year Plan for Environmental Protection specifies for the first time the creation of group of powerful companies and conglomerates. This move aims to make environment protection industry a new pillar industry for China’s economy from 2006 to 2010.

During the period, China's environment protection industry is expected to have an average annual growth rate of 15 percent to 17 percent, with total revenue reaching nearly $126 billion to $143 billion (CNY 880 billion to 1 trillion) in 2010. Total investment for industries related to environment protection will reach about $200 billion (CNY1.4 trillion), twice the amount posted in 2001 to 2005 and accounting for 1.5 percent of GDP during the same period. Among the total, an estimated $94 billion (CNY 660 billion) will be invested in urban environment infrastructure, about $30 billion (CNY 210 billion) in the treatment of industrial pollution, approximately $50 billion (CNY 350 billion) in new environment protection projects and nearly $16 billion (CNY 115 billion) in ecological environment protection.

In recent years, the policy on energy-saving and emission reduction has provided a huge market demand for China's environment protection industry, continuously increasing investment in environment protection. The newly amended Energy Conservation Law offers great policy support to the environment protection industry as well as provides some preferential treatment in financial policies including credit policy, which enables environment protection industry enjoy unique advantages.
